The San Francisco 49ers drafted Alex Smith, ranked number one overall, in the 2005 NFL draft. Alex Smith has been with the 49ers his whole NFL career as a backup and a starter. The 49ers wanted to keep Smith as a backup for Colin Kaepernick but Smith wanted to be a starter so the 49ers had no choice but to trade or release Smith to another team.
The team that showed the most interest in Smith was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs made a deal with the 49ers and now Smith is headed to Kansas City, and in return the 49ers will not have to pay Smith $8.5 million. They will also get a second round no. 34 overall draft pick in this year’s 2013 NFL draft and receive a conditional mid-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
The trade will not be official until the new NFL year begins on March 13. Smith will be missed in San Francisco after the eight seasons he has spent with the 49ers.
